Ret Taylor became the first All Saints Episcopal athlete to join a Division I program after making his commitment to Texas Tech on Wednesday.

Taylor, who was in middle school when the cross country program started at All Saints Episcopal, will join the Red Raiders’ cross country and track program as a preferred walk-on. He also received an academic scholarship and will participate in Texas Tech’s honors college and engineering program.

“I’m excited about meeting a lot of new people that have the same passion for running that I do and being able to compete with some of the best runners in the nation,” Taylor said.

Taylor holds All Saints Episcopal’s record in cross country and well as the mile and two-mile races. He’s a four-year All-State runner with two TAPPS 2A state individual championships and two 3,200-meter titles under his belt. The two-year Patriots team captain finished second in the 2018 TAPPS state cross country meet and is headed back to the state track and field meet next month.

Patriots coach Dino Jones will always remember how Taylor laid the foundation for the Patriots’ cross country program.

“Every time somebody saw him, he was out running whether it was 7:00 in the morning or 6:30 in the evening,” Jones said. “Thank you to Texas Tech and what they’ve done for him in giving him this opportunity. They’ve got a diamond in the rough. He’s going to work.”
